Beyond Smoking: Understanding Your Complete Lung Health Risk

CT technology used for heart and lung scans at Visionary Wellness & Imaging.

Family history, environmental exposures, occupational hazards, and previous illnesses all deserve consideration in preventive healthcare.

When it comes to lung health, one question often dominates the conversation: Have you ever smoked?

It’s an important question. But at Visionary Wellness & Imaging, we believe it’s only one part of a much larger conversation.

What if you have never smoked, but lung cancer runs in your family? What if you’ve spent decades working around dust, chemicals, smoke, or other hazardous materials? Or what if you’ve experienced COVID-19 and continue to notice changes in your breathing?

Understanding your lung health means understanding your entire health history—not just your smoking history.

The Risk Factors We Should Be Talking About

Family history. Having a parent, sibling, or child diagnosed with lung cancer may increase your risk, even if you have never smoked. Knowing your family’s health history can help guide conversations with your healthcare provider.

Environmental exposures. Radon, air pollution, asbestos, and certain airborne contaminants can contribute to lung disease and cancer risk. Some exposures occur in our homes and communities without our knowledge.

Occupational hazards. Firefighters, construction workers, industrial employees, and others may experience repeated exposure to substances that can affect long-term respiratory health.

Smoking and vaping. Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer. Vaping also raises respiratory health concerns, although its long-term cancer risks are still being studied.

COVID-19 and previous respiratory illnesses. Some individuals experience ongoing respiratory symptoms or lung abnormalities following COVID-19, particularly after severe infections. Persistent breathing problems deserve appropriate medical evaluation, which may sometimes include imaging.

Not every risk factor calls for a CT scan. But every relevant factor deserves consideration in developing a more complete understanding of your health.

Firefighters Are Helping Change the Conversation

Here in North Texas, the Flower Mound Fire Department provides an important example of the growing emphasis on occupational health.

Following the tragic loss of firefighters to cancer, the department expanded its preventive health and cancer-screening efforts.

Texas also enacted the Wade Cannon Act, effective June 1, 2026, requiring covered public employers to offer occupational cancer screenings to firefighters beginning in their fifth year of service and annually thereafter.

Although the law does not mandate routine CT scans, it recognizes that occupational hazards deserve specific attention in preventive healthcare.

The lesson extends beyond firefighting. Understanding what individuals have been exposed to throughout their careers can be an important part of assessing their health risks.

The Importance of Appropriate Screening and Early Detection

Early detection can make an important difference in the diagnosis and treatment of certain serious diseases.

The American Lung Association and the Ad Council’s Saved By The Scan campaign reinforces the value of evidence-based low-dose CT lung cancer screening for eligible individuals.

At Visionary, we share the commitment to education and early detection while encouraging patients to consider their broader personal and family health histories.

Established lung cancer screening guidelines remain important. Individuals with other concerns, such as occupational exposures or persistent post-COVID symptoms, should discuss whether additional clinical evaluation or imaging is appropriate.

The Visionary Philosophy

At Visionary Wellness & Imaging, we believe preventive healthcare should begin with a more complete understanding of the individual.

Our Heart & Lung CT service is one of the imaging options available to help patients obtain information about their cardiovascular and pulmonary health. Depending on the examination and protocol, imaging may reveal findings that warrant further medical attention.

However, no scan can detect every condition, and the appropriate use of imaging must account for medical history, potential benefits, limitations, radiation exposure, and the possibility of false-positive results.

Our goal is to help people ask better questions, understand their risks, and work with qualified healthcare professionals to make informed decisions.

Because your health is about more than your smoking history. It’s about your family, your environment, your occupation, your past illnesses, and your future.
