What Is A Breast Ultrasound?

Ultrasound technology used for breast ultrasound screenings at Visionary Wellness & Imaging.

A breast ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging exam that uses sound waves to create pictures of the internal structures of the breast. It does not use radiation.

Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of breast tissue without radiation. It may help identify early signs of breast tissue changes, including dense breast tissue concerns, lumps, cyst-like findings, or other areas that may need follow-up with a healthcare provider.

Breast ultrasound does not replace mammography. It is best understood as a supplemental imaging tool that may provide more information in certain situations.

Why Consider A Breast Ultrasound?

A breast ultrasound may be worth considering if you have:

  • Dense breast tissue
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • A recommendation for supplemental imaging
  • A desire for additional breast screening information

At Visionary Wellness & Imaging, breast ultrasound is reviewed with attention to detail. Even small findings can provide useful information, and our goal is to make sure nothing is quickly dismissed or overlooked.

Your results are organized into a report that you can review and discuss with your healthcare provider if follow-up is recommended.

How Is A Breast Ultrasound Performed?

During a breast ultrasound, you lie on an exam table while gel is applied to the skin. A handheld ultrasound device, called a transducer, is moved over the breast tissue to capture real-time images.

The exam is non-invasive and does not require sedation. You may feel light pressure from the transducer, especially over an area that is already tender.

What To Expect After A Breast Ultrasound

After the ultrasound, you can return to normal activities. There is no downtime.

Your images are reviewed and organized into a report. If the ultrasound shows a finding, you can share the report with your healthcare provider to discuss follow-up imaging, monitoring, or additional evaluation.
